Zakir Hasan: A bastion of traditional Test

Published : 04 Aug 2024 09:29 PM

In an era increasingly dominated by aggressive, T20-influenced batting, Zakir Hasan stands as a refreshing outlier. The Bangladeshi opener has carved a niche for himself with a patient, technically sound approach that harkens back to a bygone era of Test cricket. His batting is characterized by meticulous shot selection, a strong defence, and a willingness to accumulate runs at a measured pace. This traditionalist style has been instrumental in his ascent to the Test arena.

Hasan faces a stern examination of his technique in the upcoming Test series against Pakistan. Known for his meticulous shot selection and unwavering defence, Hasan’s patient approach will be put to the test against the hosts’ formidable pace attack. Moreover, the reverse swing that is a hallmark of Pakistan’s bowling arsenal will demand exceptional skill and concentration from the Bangladesh opener.

Hasan’s approach is a stark contrast to the modern trend of batsmen prioritizing power and strike rate. While there’s undeniable merit in these attributes, Hasan’s method offers a different path to success. By building an innings gradually and capitalizing on loose deliveries, he has demonstrated the effectiveness of a more conservative approach. His ability to anchor the innings and build partnerships is a valuable asset to any Test batting lineup.

The demands of modern Test cricket, however, are immense. Batsmen are expected to not only occupy the crease for extended periods but also contribute to the team's scoring rate.

While Hasan’s defensive prowess is admirable, he will need to continue evolving his game to address these challenges.

This may involve incorporating more aggressive strokes into his repertoire or simply accelerating at crucial junctures in an innings.

As Bangladesh prepares to face the formidable pace attacks of Pakistan, Hasan’s technique will be put to the ultimate test. The conditions in the subcontinent are typically conducive to seam bowling, and the ability to defend effectively will be paramount. Hasan’s experience of playing against India A before his Test debut will undoubtedly be invaluable as he seeks to replicate his domestic success on the international stage.

The series against Pakistan offers Hasan an opportunity to showcase his talent on the global stage. A strong performance could solidify his position as a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s Test batting order and enhance his reputation as one of the game’s most promising young talents.

Zakir Hassan, who made his Test debut at his 24 years age against India in 2022, when Bangladesh suffered innings defeat but the debutant proved his mettle with scoring century at his Test opener.

In his tiny Test career of seven Test scored 455 runs in 14 innings at an average of 32.50 with a hundred and four fifties.
