A 23-year-old juvenile named Lavlu Mia Loyt has been sentenced to death by the court for the alleged rape of a sixth-grade girl student in Mithapukur, Rangpur.
The verdict was delivered by Judge Md. Mustafa Kamal of the Rangpur Women and Children Torture Prevention Tribunal-1 on Thursday afternoon. In court, the accused was in attendance.
The case details and court sources indicate that Jannati Akhtar Shathi, a sixth-grade student at Jafarpur Dakhil Madrasa, is the daughter of Mansur Ali of East Jairampur Anwar village in Mithapukur Upazila. She was sexually assaulted by Lovelu Mia, also known as Loyt, who was the son of Matiar Rahman from the Pashwaarti Zafarpur village, in the afternoon of September 1, 2021.
On September 3, the girl's father filed a lawsuit against Loyt, taking on the role of plaintiff in this incident. Following the filing of a case, police detained Loyt. The accused persisted in threatening the family member in the name of his partner even after his arrest.
At one point on September 25, that year, around nine o'clock, Shathi poisoned herself because she could not handle the stress. Upon her arrival at Rangpur Medical College Hospital, the attending physician pronounced her deceased.
Mansur Ali took the plaintiff role in this incident and, on September 30, filed a second lawsuit, alleging that Loyt's mother, Lovely Begum, and father, Matiar Rahman, had encouraged his suicide. The lawsuit is still pending.
Public Prosecutor (PP) Khandaker Rafiq Hasnain, the lawyer for the state side of the case, said, "We are satisfied that the verdict ordered the death penalty for the accused." I demand the speedy execution of the verdict.
