A youth was killed and 10 others were injured in a clash of two groups of villagers over offering prayers in a mosque at Bahara village under Muksudpur upazila in Gopalganj on Monday. The deceased was identified as Sujan Sheikh, 26, of the village.
The clash took place at village in the morning. There has been a longstanding conflict between Muzibur Sheikh and Badsah Matabbar of Bahara village over establishing supremacy. Both the groups got into an altercation at about 6:30 am over prayers.
One group wanted to follow the government directive according to which only five devotees would be allowed to pray at the mosque at a time, while the other group wanted to follow to traditional norms. At one stage, they locked in the bloody clash with weapons, leaving Sujan dead on the spot.
Sub-inspector (SI) of Muksudpur Police Station Nabo Kumar confirmed the matter. On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, he said. Police recovered the body and sent it to the Gopalganj General Hospital morgue for autopsy, said the SI.
