A youth hacked his stepmother and two step-siblings to death in Sylhet city in the early hours on Friday. The youth, however, tried to commit suicide reportedly after killing the woman and her two children.
The deceased were identified as Rubiya Begum, 30, wife of Abdal Hossain Bulbul, and her children Tahsin, 7, and Maha Begum, 9.
The incident took place at a rented house at Mirer Moholla area in Sylhet city at about 1:00 am. Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shahporan Police Station Syed Anisur Rahman confirmed the matter.
The OC said that Abad Hossain, 22, son of Abdal Hossain Bulbul of Beanibazar upazila in the district, attacked the trio with sharp weapons when his father was away. Mahbub worked at a shop at BIDC area in the city. Police primarily suspect that Mahbub stabbed his stepmother and stepsiblings in their house over a family dispute.
Rubiya and Maha died on the spot while the youngest victim passed away after being taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, the police official said quoting hospital sources.
Police arrested Abad when he was trying to set the house on fire after neighbours heard screams for help and informed police. Police also recovered bloodstained knife from the house. Police were quizzing the youth, said the OC.
Doctors at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital said that the deceased mother, daughter and son had numerous sharp weapon marks on their bodies.
