World food day was observed in Jhenaidah aiming at increasing food production under food safety net programmes and re3duce the prices of essential commodities. Food Rights Jhenaidah district unit committee organized the programme on Tuesday.
The organizers formed a human chain in front of Jhenaidah press club that ended at the
deputy commissioner’s office parading the main roads sin the town.
Later the precisionists handed over a memorandum to the deputy commissioner (DC) Manira Begum with a number of demands.
DC Manira Begum, Padma Sanajkalyan Sangstha executive director Habibur Rahman, Food Rights Jhenaidah district unit committee member Bashir Ahmed, Hafizur Rahman, Nasir Uddin Biswas, Padma Youth Initiatives assistant coordinator Mehedi Hasan among others spoke.
The speakers had urged upon the government to include more poor and distressed people in the social safety net programmes, increase the quantity of food items in the supply lists and ensure stability in market prices.
They also demanded punishments against the dishonest hoarders liable for increasing the food items unnecessarily and unethically.
They had given emphasis on formation of “price commission” at an early time.
