The World Blood Donor Day will be observed in the country today as elsewhere of the globe on Tuesday to make conscious of safe infusion of blood. World Health Organization (WHO) fixes the day’s theme is ‘Donating blood is an act of solidarity. Join the effort and save lives’
Quantum Foundation has come forward in observing the day along with the government’s initiative with its highest donor pool of 450,000 voluntary blood donors. Worldwide voluntary blood donors are the safe source of blood as they do it from humanity ground.
The day’s objectives is to show respect to voluntary donors and make other people conscious about donating blood. The day is selected in observance of the birthday of Australian Biologist and Physician Scientist Karl Landsteiner in recognition to his contribution in safe blood infusion. The Nobel winner Carl was the first discovered blood groups of A, B, O and AB. The WHO observes the day in cooperation with International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Society, International Federation of Blood Donor Organization and International Society of Blood Infusion. This year Mexico City will be organizing the global program as the main organizer of the day.
The Quantum Foundation is now working round the clock in the blood donation program which launched in 1996. It has already recognized as the safe source of bloods in Bangladesh for abiding by all guidelines of WHO in its Lab since the Lab inception.
So far the foundation has supplied 1.4 million units (14 Lac units) of blood. It has also supplied the blood at free of cost to poor people who cannot afford processing fees. During the pandemic period of COVID-19, about 85,000 units blood and blood cell were distributed amog the people in need following health issues.
On the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, Quantum Foundation has chalked out colorful program. This include rally by blood donors, blood camp and reception to the blood donors.
The colorful rally will be brought out with participation of the Quantum Foundation’s voluntary blood donors from National Museum premises in Shahbag at 10 am and it will end at National Press Club. The reception for the blood donors who donated blood at least 50 times and 25 times will be held at 11 am at Press Club auditorium. Honorable Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud MP will attend the program as chief guest. A blood camp will also be organizing simultaneously at Press Club premises.
Patients like anemic, thalassaemia, haemophilia need blood. Besides People need blood during delivery due to hemorrhage, operation, burn injury and accidents. A physically sound person from aged between 18 and 60 is eligible for donating blood.
The country is yet to be self sufficient in blood donation due to huge gap remain in blood need and supply. On average 800,000 to 1,000,000 units of blood are needed every year in the country. The Quantum is capable to supply 11 per cent of the demand with its highest donor pool. So professional donors occupy main source of blood in the country.
As blood is only substitute of blood, a mass awareness can increase the number voluntary blood donors and thus can meet the country’s demand.
