Workshop on lentil held in Ishwardi

To meet the demand of protein and increase production, a one-day regional workshop on lentil was held at Ishwardi on Saturday.

The workshop was held at Pulses Research Center and Regional Agricultural Research Centre auditorium at Ishwardi in Pabna on Saturday.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) and the Global Alliance for Improve Nutrition (GAIN) jointly organised the workshop.

Additional Director of Bogura Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) agriculturist Sarkar Shafi Uddin Ahmed spoke as the chief guest at the workshop. Ishwardi Agriculture Training Institute Principal Md Saiful Islam Azam Khan, Regional Agricultural Research Institute Chief Scientific Officer Altaf Hossain and Lead Officer of the Global Alliance for Improve Nutrition (GAIN) Ashik Mahmud spoke as special guests.

Monitoring and Fieldwork Wing (DAE) Dhaka Additional Director Md Mojdar Hossain presided over the workshop. Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Khamar Bari Pabna Deputy Director Dr Md Jamal Uddin delivered the welcome speech.

Senior Scientific Officer of Pulses Research Center Dr Md Shahinuzzaman and The Global Alliance for Improve Nutrition official Ahmed Shihab Jamal presented the articles on the content of the workshop.

Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) Bogura, Agriculture Officers of Sirajganj and Pabna, farmers, businessmen and journalists were present at the workshop.

Speakers at the workshop emphasized on the production of lentil pulses in the country to reduce import of pulses from abroad. They said that foreign exchange will be saved if the country is self-sufficient in the production of pulses. The country's food needs, protein and nutritional safety will be achieved. 

Additional Director of Bogura Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) agriculturist Sarkar Shafi Uddin Ahmed said there is no opportunity to increase the cultivated land to increase the production of lentil. Therefore, we all have to work together to achieve the target through the development of conventional varieties of pulse crops of the country or the introduction of improved varieties.
