Workers block key road in N’ganj over unpaid wages

Hundreds of workers from two factories under the Crony Group in Narayanganj’s BSCIC Industrial Area blocked the Dhaka-Munshiganj regional road on Monday, demanding unpaid wages.

The protest, which began around 10:30 am, caused major traffic disruptions and continued well into the afternoon.

By 4:00 pm, the workers were still on the road, halting traffic and creating significant delays. The unrest forced local authorities to take immediate action.

A large contingent of police, army personnel, and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) was deployed to manage the situation, according to Mostafizur Rahman, an industrial officer in Narayanganj BSCIC.

The protest escalated when some workers began vandalising nearby factories. In response, many factory owners decided to close their operations early, sending workers home before lunch to prevent further damage.

“The situation is tense,” said Rahman. “We have around 432 factories in this area, and most of them have stopped work due to the ongoing protest.”

At the heart of the protest is the workers' demand for unpaid wages, a situation that has left many frustrated. As the stand-off continues, the local authorities are working to restore order and negotiate with the workers. The outcome of the protest remains uncertain as the workers stand firm on their demands.
