Women’s participation in engineering and technology on the rise: CUET VC

Chattogram University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Mohammad Rafiqul Alam said, "From the beginning of civilization, the contribution of our women was undeniable.  Women have a direct role behind the current development and progress of the country.  Almost half of the population of our country are women.  The overall development of the country is not possible leaving them behind.  Therefore, along with the expansion of women's education, women should also advance in the workplace.  More than 1200 women students are currently studying in CUET.  Also, the number of women officers and employees has also increased at a promising rate in the last decade.  That makes us even more optimistic about women's participation in the engineering and technology sector.”

 He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at an event organized on the occasion of International Women's Day under the slogan "Digital technology and innovation, gender discrimination will be eradicated" organized by the complaint committee formed with the aim of strictly suppressing sexual harassment activities in higher education institutions at the academic council room of the university on Tuesday afternoon.

Bandarban Deputy Commissioner Yeasmin Parveen Tibriji was the chief speaker on the occasion.  CUET Alumni and Bangladesh Power Development Board Member (Planning and Development) Neera Majumdar, CUET Registrar (Additional Charge) Professor Dr Sheikh Mohammad Humayun Kabir and Student Welfare Director Professor Dr Rezaul Karim were special guests.  Dr Mosammad Roksana Khatun, convener of the complaints committee formed to strictly suppress sexual harassment activities in CUET Higher Education Institution and Professor of Chemistry, presided over the event.  Department Head of Water Resources Strategy Department and Professor of Civil Engineering Department Dr Aisha Akhtar, Provost of Sufia Kamal Hall and Professor of Civil Engineering Department Dr Moshah Farzana Rahman Juthi, Head of Department of Mathematics Professor Dr Moshammat Tahmina Akhtar, Section Officer of EEE Department Afroza Sultana also spoke on the occasion.  Rima, Staff Association Joint General Secretary Kulsuma Begum, Urban and Regional Planning Department student Ishrat Jahan Bushra.  Assistant Professor of Humanities Department Nahida Sultana and Deputy Director (Information and Publication) Mohammad Fazlur Rahman delivered the welcome speech in the program by Associate Professor of Humanities Department Farhad Jamila.

Deputy Commissioner of Bandarban Yeasmin Parveen Tibriji said, “Women's rights are recognized in several articles of the constitution, Bangabandhu also emphasized on the empowerment of women in independent Bangladesh.  A Deputy Commissioner has to perform executive duties as District Collector, District Magistrate and Deputy Commissioner simultaneously.  I am the first woman Deputy Commissioner of Chattogram Hill Tracts.  Despite being a woman, I never thought of myself as a woman while performing that duty.  As a human being, I have been fulfilling my responsibilities.  Men and women are not separate entities.  Men and women must be partners in the development of our country.  The belief that we girls can and can be awakened among all men.  Many people think that women behave arrogantly only when they are educated and working.  The more educated we are, the more modest we should be.  It should be remembered that marriage is not done by men and women alone, both of them do it.  Therefore, the responsibility of the family is equal to both of them.  Parenting has to be done by both.  My responsibility is not to say, we have to practice saying.  The progress of our women today is due to the support of Begum Rokeya, their husbands, brothers and fathers.  We women need to know the history of how the women of New China worked together with men, the development of the world economy of New China.  Today, the progress of women in Bangladesh is also a result of the charismatic leadership of Bangabandhu's daughter, the honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

 Earlier, a rally was taken out in front of CUET Bhavan on the occasion of Women's Day.  It was led by CUET Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Mohammad Rafiqul Alam.  University teachers, students, women officers and employees participated in the rally.  During the discussion, the Deputy Commissioner of Bandarban highlighted the empowerment and progress of women in the country by presenting a video.  Later, the International Women's Day cake was cut with the women present
