Women booters’ experience in int’l arena for 14 yrs

Bangladesh women football team entered into the International competition just 14 years back on January 10, 2010 with playing in the South Asian Games (SA Games and that might be a historical day for the country’s female football.  

Bangladesh women could not make it a happy entrance in the international arena when they suffered a solitary goal defeat at the hands of Nepal in 2010. 

Interestingly right after a decade of Bangladesh women’s entering into the women’s global competition, made a history defeating Nepal by 3-1 in 2022 to win the SAFF Championship title, against whom they made their historical international debut. 

Bangladesh lost the debut match to Nepal at the Bangabandhu Stadium when they tasted their first victory in the second match and had successive second win in the third match when they defeated Sri Lanka 1-0 and Pakistan 2-0. Bangladesh won bronze medal and in that competition they suffered 7-0 defeat to India.   

Since then, in the last 15 years Bangladesh national women’s team played a total of 61 international matches, won 24, drew eight and lost 28 matches. The success rate is 39.34 per cent. 

In the SAFF Championship, Bangladesh played 25 matches (till the match against India on Wednesday in the ongoing SAFF), they won 14, made two draws and suffered defeat in nine matches. 

Sabina Khatun sides faced Bhutan for six times in the SAFF and have 100 percent winning record and it’s the best results of Bangladesh's women against any team in international competition. 

Sabina & Co. who has been dominating on their Bhutanese counterparts since their first meeting on December 15, 2010, won the first encounter by 9-0 in the SAFF Championship in Dhaka and another big margin win o 8-0 against Bhutan was in the 2022 SAFF semifinals. Bangladesh defeated Bhutan by 5-1 and 4-2 in two friendlies in Thimphu this year. In the 2012 SAFF Championship Bangladesh won by 1-0 against Bhutan and 2-0.   

Bangladesh played as many number 12 matches against Nepal and India in international football. 

Against Nepal they could win only one match out of their 12 meetings and that was a historical victory in the 2022 SAFF Championship final. Bangladesh beat Nepal by 3-1 at their home ground to lift the SAFF trophy.   

In their 12 meetings against the South Asian powerhouses India, who have a long tradition of women’s football, Bangladesh won two, lost nine and drew one match. 

The first win against India was by 3-0 at Dasharath Stadium, Kathmandu in the group stage of SAFF Championship in 2022 when their second win came on Wednesday by 3-1 at the same venue in the ongoing SAFF Championship.  

Bangladesh scored 10 and conceded 44 goals in 12 matches against India. 

Apart from 11 international matches against India, Bangladesh played three tier-two matches against Kolkata XI in 2013. They won two by 6-1 and 4-0 and one match was drawn. 

Bangladesh played three matches against Pakistan, won two and drew one. Bangladesh won their first match by 1-0 at the South Asian Games in Dhaka in 2010, thrashed by 6-0 in the SAFF Championship in Kathmandu in 2022 and drew by 1-1 in the 2024 SAFF Championship at same ground. 

In 2013, the Bangladesh women's team played three matches under Golam Jilani in Dhaka in the qualifying round of the AFC Women's Championship. Bangladesh lost 9-0 to Thailand when they lost by 2-0 and 4-0 to Iran and the Philippines respectively.
