An elderly woman was hacked to death allegedly by her son at Dewan Bari of Paschim Barali village under Faridganj upazila of Chandpur district early on Wednesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Monowara Begum, 65, wife of late Abdul Hashem of the area.
On the other hand, the alleged killer's name is Momin Dewan, 42. Police and local sources said Momin is mentally handicapped and had been in jail for a long time in connection to a murder case before.

About three months ago, he got out of jail on bail and beat his mother and niece with death threats. Early on Wednesday morning, he stabbed his mother with sharp knife and ran away from the home later.
Momin Dewan was held by the locals from Bhatirgaon in the municipal area around 9 am and handed over to the police for taking further action against him.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Faridganj Police Station Mohammad Shahid Hossain said the body was recovered and sent to the hospital for autopsy.
A case was filed in this connection, the OC added.
