Witness testimony has begun in the BDT 2.27 billion lawsuit filed against mobile network operator Robi Axiata Limited. The testimony commenced, Sunday, at the Joint District and Sessions Judge's Court in Dhaka.
The plaintiff, former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Robi, Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, testified. Following his testimony, the defence lawyers cross-examined him. As the cross-examination was not completed, Judge Alamgir Al Mamun scheduled the continuation of the cross-examination and further testimony for July 25. Mahtab Uddin confirmed his testimony.
On August 22, 2022, Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, a former CEO, filed a lawsuit seeking compensation from the company for "retirement benefits and wrongful termination." The lawsuit named Robi Axiata, as well as former CEO Izzaddin Idris, current Board Chairman Thayaparan S. Sangara Pillai, and other relevant individuals as defendants.
According to the complaint, Mahtab Uddin submitted his resignation on August 2, 2021, which was supposed to take effect on October 31 of the same year. Robi's Board of Directors informed him through a letter on August 5, 2021, that his resignation was accepted unconditionally. However, on May 22, 2022, Robi Axiata Group issued a termination notice to Mahtab Uddin. Suddenly, on October 7, 2021, Robi issued a show-cause notice to Mahtab Uddin regarding a financial transaction from 2019. The plaintiff, Mahtab Uddin Ahmed, claims in the complaint that the Axiata Group and Robi's Board were aware of this transaction.
