The rural people here and there due to ignorance of the commoners have been killing Guishap (Monitor Lizard), jackal, birds, mechhobagh (fishcat), sajaru, mongoose (beji) and other wild lives. The people involved in killing the wild lives feel proud after killing them. The official of the wildlife management and nature conservation unit of the department of forestry (DoF) has been conducting awareness activities to protect the wild lives.
Jahir Raihan, a renowned environment activist in Jhenaidah said he along with his team members including his son Topu Raihan has been moving everyday and rescuing and releasing illegally caught birds, guishap and other wild lives. Many volunteers got involved in the noble activities, Jahir Raihan said.
Khulna divisional forest officer (DFO) of the wildlife management and nature conservation unit of the department of forestry (DoF) Nirmal Kumar Paul when contacted said they have been conducting awareness activities in 23 districts in greater Khulna, Jashore, Kushtia, Patuakhali and Barishal and Faridpur where a total of 1,000 people in 20 groups were given training on wildlife management and nature conservation.
The aim of the awareness was huge wild lives including guest birds, jackal, sajaru, mechhobagh, guishap, mongoose and pother species are fallen victim of killing when they anyhow appear in the public. He said they trainers try to make it understandable to the people that only the lives in jungles are not wild lives. Rather, other animals and birds are also included here.
As the DoF has no adequate staff in the field level to make the people aware, the wildlife management and nature conservation unit of the department of forestry has been running the programmes involving community people in groups at different areas. Some Jahir Raihan, a renowned environment activist was given responsibility to work for the DoF in Jhenaidah, Shailkupa and other parts of the district. He along with his team members have been rescuing guest birds from the clutch of the hunters, other wild lives including guishap etc.
