Wheat harvesting nears to end in south-western region

Harvesting of wheat is nearing to end with excellent yield rate in ten districts of south-western region of the country.

Officials of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) said a target of producing 95,908 tonnes of wheat from 29,063 hectares of land was fixed from ten districts of the region during the current season.

The ten districts are Narail, Jashore, Jhenaidah, Magura, Chuadanga, Kushtia, Meherpur, Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat.

DAE sources said, wheat cultivation on 1,520 hectares of land with production target 5,016 metric tonnes in Narail, only 75 hectares of land with production target 248 metric tonnes in Jashore, 3,007 hectares of land with production target 9,923 metric tonnes in Jhenaidah, 4,948 hectares of land with production target 16,328 metric tonnes in Magura, 10,368 hectares of land with production target 34,294 metric tonnes in Kushtia,743 hectares of land with production target 2,452 metric tonnes in Chuadanga, 6,895 hectares of land with production target 22,754 metric tonnes in Meherpur,216 hectares of land with production target 713 metric tonnes in Khulna,1,098 hectares of land with production target 3,623 metric tonnes in Satkhira and 193 hectares of land with production target 667 metric tonnes in Bagerhat districts of the region this season.

The market price of newly harvested wheat stands at Tk 25 per kg now on an average, said Narail DAE official Emdad Hossain.

Talking to Bangladesh Post, farmers Rakib Sheikh of Taltola village in Narail sadar upazila, Khasru Sheikh of Kalagachi, Arifuzzaman of Morichpasha under Lohagora upazila of Narail said, they already have completed harvest of high productive wheat varieties and got yield rates between 2.81 and 3.00 tonnes per hectare.

Additional Director of Jashore DAE Nirmal Kumar Dey said, farmers are getting better yield rate of wheat adding that harvest of the crop will be completed by the current week in the region. Favorable weather conditions along with adequate supplying of necessary seeds, fertilisers and pesticides cause the bumper production of wheat this region, he added.
