WDB takes step to prevent river erosion

The Water Development Board has approved an allocation  of Tk. 1.38 crore to prevent the Chandpur Emergency Erosion to protect the Ibrahimpur Union of Chandpur Sadar and Ishanbala Bazar of Haimchar and the adjoining areas on the right bank of the Meghna River in Chandpur.

Of this, tk. 83 lakh has been sanctioned for the preservation of 215-meter area of Ibrahimpur Alur Bazar in Chandpur Sadar and Tk. 55 lakh for preservation of 100-meter area of Ishanbala in Haimchar to prevent emergency erosion. An official of the Water Development Board said this on Monday, August 10.

According to the Water Development Board, houses and agricultural land including Ibrahimpur Alu Bazar and Ishanbala Bazar, Police Outpost, MGS Girls School, Koralia Government Primary School and other government and private establishments are being washed away in the Meghna River due to tidal water.

Md. Jahangir Hossain, deputy assistant engineer in charge of Haimchar, said in a telephone call that the Water Development Board allocated the money for the protection of the river banks. Initiatives have been taken to save the area by throwing geo bags. The weight of each geo bag has been fixed at 250 kg.

He added that in the presence of an executive magistrate, geo-bags are being counted and dumped in the area. About, 4,447 geo bags will be dumped in Ishanbala on August 09 and another 4,500 bags will be dumped in Sobar on Tuesday. Emergency work at Ibrahimpur Alu Bazar is nearing completion. About 13,000 geo-bags have already been dumped there to save the river bank.
