The prices watermelon and coconut have increased recently in Chuadanga due to extreme heat.
The district has been recorded highest temperatures in the country during the last week. A temperature of 39.2 degrees Celsius was recorded on Monday as well. The intense heat has brought instability in public life. In this situation, the demand for green coconut and watermelon has increased.
It is learnt from the businessmen that the price of watermelon has increased in the retail market. 100 pieces of watermelons were bought at Tk 15000-20000 from Koira of Khulna by Chuadanga Businessmen before 7 days. Now the same is being bought at Tk 22000-26000.
Price of watermelon of Barisal area is comparably low in Chuadanga market for not tasting good. The price of this watermelon was between Tk.100-140. Now it is buying for 160-190 from the area. Not to demand of the item the businessmen of Chuadanga are not buying and selling.
In the market, a small size of watermelon of Koira in Khulna is being sold at Tk 170-270 and a large ones at Tk 300-450.
Nazmul Mia, wholesaler of Rail Bazaar area said, the demand for watermelon has increased compared to before. So the market price has increased. He also stated, watermelon is being bought from Koira of Khulana at higher prices. Because of this, it is being sold at a higher price. At the beginning of fasting, the price was not so much.
On the other hand, wholesale traders used to sell a small and a big one to retailers at an average of Tk. 40-55 before a week. Now it has increased to Tk. 55-75. In the Chuadanga market, a large size of green coconut is being sold at Tk 90-100, a medium size at Tk 80-96 and a small size at Tk 50-70.
Mustafa and Geda Ali, coconut seller from Court area in the town said, "Wholesale price of green coconut is high now. So it is being sold at a higher price.
Harun Ali, a seller at Shaheed Hasan Chattor, said, green coconut is not available. When temperature will drop, green coconut price may be fall in the market.
Alamgir Kabir Shiplu of Cenema Hall Para in Chuadanga town said, last week he also bought a medium size green coconut at Tk 55. Now it is at Tk 75.
Mafizur Rahman, Publicity Secretary of District Shop Owners Association said, supply and demand are not equal, as the prices of these items may be imbalance.
