Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr Shahadat Hossain said ward-based inspection activities will continue to ensure civic services for the residents of Chattogram.
The CCC mayor came up with the assertion during a special cleanliness drive in the Chawkbazar market area on Thursday. During the visit, he checked the attendance of sanitation workers in Chawkbazar ward and asked local residents about the performance of these workers. Later, the mayor personally inspected the waste management system and road conditions in Chawkbazar and Pashchim Baklia ward, gathering information from residents about various local issues. He also distributed leaflets to raise awareness about dengue prevention.
The mayor said, I did not come to sit in an air-conditioned room. I am here to work on the streets and stand by the people. I am telling the staff of the sanitation department that I want to work as a city servant. I want to ensure that people do not suffer. I am placing a strong emphasis on cleanliness. My goal is to transform Chattogram into a clean, green, and healthy city.
Adding further, he said, during the previous government's tenure, each councilor appointed 60 to 90 sanitation workers per ward. I am checking their attendance and directly inquiring from the public whether these workers are fulfilling their responsibilities. They are being paid Tk 14,000 to Tk 16,000 each, but I want to ensure that they are meeting the core objective of cleanliness. I have already visited Purba Baklia and Pahchim Bakalia wards, and today I am here in Chawkbazar ward. I will continue visiting every ward to raise public awareness, encouraging people not to litter on the streets or throw garbage into drains but to use dustbins instead.
The mayor said, if you find that sanitation workers are not providing their services, please inform us, and we will take action. We are fully prepared to provide any service to the public. As you know, we have established a Dengue Management Center from day one of the outbreak. We are offering free dengue tests there. Additionally, we have allocated 10 beds for critical patients to receive treatment at any time.
Chattogram City Corporation Secretary Md Ashraful Amin, Chief Sanitation Officer Commander Latiful Haque Kazmi, Malaria and Mosquito Control Officer Md Sharful Islam Mahi, the Mayor’s Personal Assistant Maruful Haque Chowdhury, along with officials and staff from the sanitation department were present at that time.
