A two-day Wangala festival has started on Saturday at Birishiri in Durgapur, Netrokona, organized by the Cultural Academy of a small Garo ethnic group.
It is the main festival of the indigenous Garo people in the area. This festival is organized by the tribal people every year to please the sun god after taking the grain home.
KM Khalid MP, Minister of State for Culture, Government of the People's Republic of Bangladesh inaugurated the Wangala Festival as the chief guest under the chairmanship of Kazi Md Abdur Rahman, President of Birishiri Cultural Academy, Durgapur and Deputy Commissioner of Netrokona.
Local MP Manu Majumder, Mymensingh-1 MP Jewel Areng MP, District Superintendent of Police Md Akbar Ali Munshi, Upazila Nirbahi Officer Md Rajibul Hasan were present as special guests on the occasion.
Sujan Hajong, Director, Cultural Academy, Minority Ethnic Group, delivered the welcome address at the inaugural function.
Note that the word ‘wana’ means offering goods to the gods and goddesses and the word ‘gala’ means offering.
They believe that the sun germinates seedlings and matures under the direction of the Sun God. So before the harvest, gratitude is expressed to him by organizing this festival.
