Walkway at Kalurghat bridge opens

The scenic walkway at the Kalurghat Bridge over the Karnaphuli river in Chattogram has been opened to the public. People will enjoy the beauty of the river while traveling from one end to the other end of the bridge. People won’t have to wait too long for the roadway.

Chief Engineer of Bangladesh Railway East Zone Mohammad Abu Jafar Mia said, “Following the advice of BUET, we have completed the construction of a scenic walkway. The roadway will be opened next month. The carpeting work of railway is ongoing. The pedestrians will be able to cross the bridge through the 6-feet-wide walkway, which has been built on the south side of the bridge. The pedestrians of both sides of the bridge can cross the bridge. However, they need to be cautious so that they don’t get hit by any motorcycle or bicycle while crossing the bridge.”

“There will be 8-feet-high barrier on both sides of the bridge so that the large vehicles won’t be able to get on the bridge. Earlier, water logged on the bridge. So the wood and iron of the bridge were dilapidated. It won’t happen again as we set a plastic pipe under the railway line. Water will drain through this pipe to the river,” he added.

While visiting the spot, it was seen that there is a 4.5-feet-high railing at the side of the river of the walkway. On the other hand, there is a 5.5-feet-high railing at the side of the rail route. So, there will be no problem for the pedestrians while using the walkway. There are three stairs on each end of the walkway so that none can ride a bicycle or motorcycle on the walkway.

There is a risk of accident if anyone will try to cross the bridge by a bicycle using the walkway, said the bridge construction contractor Max Infrastructure Limited.

Kalurghat Bridge was built over the Karnaphuli river in 1930.
