The government’s decision not to hold the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or equivalent examinations due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic is a wise one, experts said.
They believe that, the move will make the education sector dynamic and prosperous, and out of health risk.
Talking to The Bangladesh Post former University of Dhaka’s (DU) professor MahbuburRahman said, “The decision at a glimpse may not seem good but this is an appropriate decision from my point of view.
If you look at the world education scene, many countries are yet to find a path to overcome this problem.The ministry of education for the sake of students’ bright future has taken this bold decision which would relieve their parents of tension and as well as accelerate their academic life, he added.
Education Minister DipuMoni made the announcement on Wednesday that, there will be no Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and equivalent examinations this year. Students will be receiving HSC results based upon evaluating the results of JSC and SSC examinations. The education minister assured that, if tests are being taken, there is a possibility of coronavirus infection among the students and teachers. Considering the current situation, it has been decided to evaluate the students differently.
“We have taken this decision keeping in mind that the method of assessment of HSC and equivalent candidates should be internationally recognized," she mentioned on Wednesday.
Regarding admission
into the higher studies courses the minister make it certain that, it will not be a problem for them to get admission to universities in the country and abroad.
Later, she further referred that the final results would be announced in December. And this decision has been taken with the opinion of all concerned including parents and education experts.
In this regard, professor of Computer Engineering Dr. Mohammad Kaikobad at Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology (BUET) told The Bangladesh Post that, “For the first time the government has to go for an alternative assessment without taking this first test after Bangladesh became independent due to corona infection.”
After high school, students go to the university level. What profession they will be able to go that is being decided at this stage. As a result, HSC results are very important for the future of the students.
Corona infection has caused severe damage to education this year. And the damage cannot be recovered, he added.
Furthermore, he mentioned concerning admission complexity that, all decisions must be taken quickly; and the Ministry of Education will now have to sit down with the concerned people on these issues, so that new complications do not arise in the admission process.
