Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) of Shailkupa in Jhenaidah had stored huge rice meant for the supply among poor people, especially vulnerable group feeding (VGF) at the upazila.
All 11 sacks of VGF rice were stored in a room of the UNO office located at the ground floor for a long without any caring. They were damaged by rotting from where the bad smell was prevailing in surrounding areas.
Finding no other alternative, UNO Saiful Islam ordered the office staff to bring the rice bags outside the store.
Locals said the rice sachets were bearing the writings as VGF rice was stored for an unknown reason in UNO’s store. It was not known to other office staffs or senior government officials. The sachets were bearing the weight for 30 kilograms each with the date 01.05. 2019.
UNO Saiful Islam over cell phone on Wednesday said that it was stored for humanitarian ground. But he could not explain why they were preserved for long without distribution during corona virus pandemic and how they were rotten. He will look into the matter later, he anyhow escaped talking.
