The US House of Representative has introduced a resolution commemorating the 50th anniversary of Bangladesh independence.
The resolution has recognised the leadership of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and noted the declaration of Independence on 26 March 1971 and subsequent nine month long war resulting in millions of displaced and dead.
The courage of freedom fighters in the struggle for independence and democracy has been also highlighted.
It was tabled by congresswoman Alexandria Ocasion-Ortez, Democratic Representative from New York.
The resolution has been co-sponsored by Congressman Gregory Meeks, Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee; Congressman Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) and Congressman Jimmy Gomez (D-CA), all from the Democratic party.
The resolution has made particular reference to the statement Senator Edward Kennedy made at the University of Dhaka on 14 February 1972 as US and Bangladesh's ‘sharing love of freedom'.
Moreover, it also noted the 'acceptance' of Bangladesh of 700,000 Rohingyas in August 2017.
It specifically has expressed support for the principles of democratic governance to which the people of Bangladesh are committed and also recognized the contribution of Bangladesh for hosting refugees fleeing genocide in Myanmar.
