The United States has announced nearly $26 million in new humanitarian aid for Rohingya in Bangladesh and elsewhere in the region.

Bangladesh is sheltering over 1 million Rohingyas who fled ethnic cleansing in the Rakhine state. Most of them fled after the 2017 military crackdown.

“The US announced nearly $26 million in additional humanitarian assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and the region, for people in Burma affected by ongoing violence, and for communities hosting refugees from Burma, bringing our total assistance to nearly $2.1 billion since 2017,” State Department spokesman Ned Price tweeted, using the old name for Myanmar.

Earlier, the United Nations said Tuesday that it needs $876 million to meet the humanitarian needs of the Rohingya in Bangladesh.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in an interview to Al Jazeera on Wednesday said the war in Ukraine and its refugees have attracted the global attention shifting the focus from the Rohingya crisis in Bangladesh which makes the situation more difficult.

"The war (in Ukraine) has made the situation more difficult. The whole focus is now on the war and the refugees from the Ukraine," she said.

The Prime Minister in her interview said that Myanmar is not positive in bringing their nationals back to their country despite Dhaka has been engaging in talks to resolve the issue.
