A union parishad member was shot dead by miscreants at Jurachhari upazila of Rangamati on Friday night. The deceased was identified as Hemanto Chakma, 32, a member of Bonjogichhara Union Parishad and a resident of Dhamaipara village in the upazila. Mahmudul Hai, officer-in-charge of Jurachhari Police Station, said that a group of miscreants stormed into a house where Hemanto was staying at about 11:30pm and opened fire at him, leaving him dead on the spot.
On information, police recovered the body that bore eight bullet marks from the spot, the OC said. None was arrested in this connection so far, the OC said, adding the reason behind the murder could not be known immediately.
