Zainal Abedin, son of Pukuria Union Parishad Chairman Ashab Uddin, has received serious injuries in an attack by criminals in Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram.
He came under the attack on the main road, near Monayem Shah Road, at Ekaittya Pukur Paar in the upazila around 10:00am on Tuesday. The police have arrested three suspected criminals after the attack.
The arrested people are Toukirul Islam, 26, son of Md Farid of ward No. 4 under Pukuria UP, Mostakim Uddin Shipu, 47, son of deceased Mozaherul Haque, and Saimon Hasan, 20, son of Md. Shah Jahan.
Md Qutub Uddin, the younger brother of the victim Zainal Abedin, has filed a case with Banshkhali Police Station against Toukirul Islam, Mohiuddin, Mostakim Uddin Shipu, Nurul Alam, Md Yunus, Md Saimon Hasan, and 5/6 unknown persons in connection with the attack.
According to the statement of the case and the victim's family, the accused conspired to extort Tk 5 lakh from Zainal Abedin. As the victim refused to pay, the accused blocked his way with locally-made weapons and allegedly carried out the attack. Relatives rescued the injured from the scene and took him first to Anwara Upazila Health Complex. Then, the doctors referred him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital as his condition was serious. Zainal Abedin is now undergoing treatment at the hospital, said Nezam Uddin, the younger brother of the victim.
Nezam Uddin also said during the attack, the accused snatched Tk 80,000 from Zainal Abedin.
Inspector Tapan Kumar Bakchi, who is in charge of Ramdas Munsi's Hat Police Investigation Centre, said a case has been filed with the police station and three accused have been arrested immediately after the incident.
