A Union Parishad (UP) Chairman was detained with 150 relief blankets from Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga on Tuesday.
The detainee was identified as Abu Sayed Pintu, UP Chairmn of Kumari union under Alamdanga upazila of the district.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Alamdanga Police Station Masudur Rahman confirmed the matter.
The UP Chairman was detained during a joint drive conducted by Army and police on Tuesday afternoon.
The police said that, in the previous fiscal year, Chairman Abu Sayeed Pinto kept 150 government blankets intended for distribution among the underprivileged in his possession with the dishonest intention of misappropriating them. Based on this allegation, a joint forces drive was conducted, and a total of 150 government blankets were seized from a room on the west side of the ground floor of the new building of Kumari union parishad. The estimated value of the blankets is Tk 65,000. Following the drive, the chairman was arrested and taken into police custody.
The OC said the chairman was arrested on charges of keeping 150 government-issued relief blankets in his possession with the intention of misappropriating them instead of distributing them.
Legal action is being taken against him.
