At least 10 people, including Sitakunda upazila nirbahi officer KM Rafiqul Islam and Sitakunda model police station officer-in-charge Tofail Ahamed, were injured in an attack by illegal encroachers on their way back after an operation at Jungle Salimpur under Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram on Thursday afternoon.
The injured were rescued and treated at a private clinic in the city after one hour clash between law enforcers and encroachers.
Police arrested four people, including a woman in this connection.
Assistant commissioner (land) Mohammad Alauddin said that illegal squatters had occupied a land allocated for Heart Foundation and building structures for a long time.
He said that despite several notices to them, they did not give up their possession.
‘Ten single plots were recovered by evicting the illegal occupants from the area. Ten people, including the UNO, the OC were injured in the attack by the illegal occupants on their way back after the eviction drive at about 3:00pm, he added.
In the operation conducted from 10:00am, more than a hundred illegal structures were removed from the land.
Police said that they began eviction drive following the court’s order.
Officers, staff members of the upazila administration, police and other law enforcement agencies participated in the eviction drive that continued till 3:00pm.
Immediately after the operation, hundreds of people attacked on on-duty officials and security forces, said Tofayel Ahamed, officer-in-charge of Sitakunda model police station.
He also said that 64 rounds of shotgun bullets were fired to bring the situation under control.
He added that the situation was brought under control after an hour-long encounter.
