‘Environment People’, an environmental voluntary organization, has taken an exceptional initiative to bring back the birds that have been lost and extinct for various reasons and to ensure the safe nesting of birds in the trees.
This environmental organisation will set up 10,000 bird nests in government-private offices-courts, residences, mosques, educational institutions, cemeteries, garden houses and roadside trees in Cox's Bazar.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Cox's Bazar Md Kamal Hossain inaugurated the bird nest setting programme on Sunday morning by tying a nest on a tree in his bungalow out of genuine love for life and birds.
‘Sea-river-fountain-hill-tree-rich Cox's Bazar was a sight to behold with it's birds. But for various reasons, those birds have been lost. Therefore, Environment People has taken this unique initiative to increase the number of birds and to ensure the safe nesting of birds in the trees to bring back the extinct bird species.
The program, which started from the deputy commissioner's bungalow, will be spread throughout the district in phases, organisers said. Environmentalists will also work to maintain the nests of these birds and stop bird hunting.
Rashedul Majid, chief executive of Environment People, said, “We are working to increase the number of birds and bring back the endangered birds. We are working to ensure the safe nesting of birds”.
Highlighting the need for birds, DC Md. Kamal Hossain said, “The role of birds in protecting the environment is immense. Cox's Bazar is an impeccable resource for environmental nature. But the number of birds is decreasing here. I hope this initiative of Environment People will turn Cox's Bazar into a bird sanctuary. The district administration will always appreciate such initiatives, he added.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Md. Ashraful Afsar, Additional District Magistrate Md. Shajahan Ali, Additional Deputy Commissioner (Overall) Md. Masudur Rahman Mollah, Assistant Commissioner (NDC) Makhan Chandra Sutradhar and others were also present at the time.
