President of the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly Volkan Bozkır is coming to Dhaka on Tuesday for a two-day visit to discuss global issues with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen and meet Rohingya refugees living in Cox’s Bazar.
He will also deliver remarks to the Foreign Services Academy addressing the current international context – with a focus on global crises and emergencies – and reflect on the state of multilateralism and the United Nations system, the UN office in Dhaka said on Monday.
After visiting the Rohingya camps, he will leave for Pakistan on Wednesday.
A senior official of the foreign ministry told Bangladesh Post that Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen will receive him at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after his arrival at around 5am.
He will meet the Prime Minister at her official residence Gonobhaban at 10:30am before his meeting with the Foreign Minister at 12:30pm at the Foreign Service Academy.
The President will also meet with the United Nations Country Team.
While visiting the Rohingya camps, he will be briefed on and observe the vital work undertaken by the UN Resident Coordinator and the UNHCR Representative, the UN office said.
A former diplomat of Turkey, Bozkir was elected as the President of the General Assembly on 17 June 2020. His presidency will run from September 2020 to September 2021.
After graduating with a degree in law from Ankara University, Bozkir joined his country’s foreign service in 1972.
He held several positions during his 39-year career there, including: Permanent Representative of Turkey to the European Union (EU); Ambassador to Romania; Consul General in New York; Counsellor of the Permanent Representation to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD); First Secretary of the Embassy in Iraq; and Vice Consul General in Stuttgart. He also served as the Foreign Policy Advisor to Prime Minister Turgut Özal; Chief of Cabinet and Chief Foreign Policy Advisor to Presidents Turgut Özal and Süleyman Demirel; Deputy Undersecretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs responsible for EU Affairs; Secretary General for EU Affairs.
