UN delegation discusses HR issues with Rizwana

A UN delegation held a meeting with Syeda Rizwana Hasan, adviser to the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change; where the issues related to crimes and human rights violations committed during the student movement in Bangladesh were discussed. 

The meeting took place at the Secretariat office of Syeda Rizwana Hasan in Dhaka on Tuesday (August). 

Rory Mungoven, head of the Asia-Pacific Division of the United Nations Human Rights Organisation; led the UN delegation during the meeting. 

Livia Cosenza, Human Rights Officer for Asia Pacific Section; Alexander James Amir El Jundi, Human Rights Officer of OHCHR; Huma Khan, Senior Human Rights Adviser of UN Resident Coordinator’s Office in Bangladesh; were also present at the meeting.

During the meeting, the adviser and the delegation focused on potential areas of collaboration between the United Nations and the interim government of Bangladesh to ensuring the protection of human rights.

Syeda Rizwana Hasan highlighted the interim government’s ongoing efforts in environmental conservation and protection of human rights. She also highlighted the government’s commitment to protecting human rights in Bangladesh.

Rory Mungoven commended Bangladesh’s initiatives and reiterated the United Nations’ support in advancing human rights agendas in the region. He stressed the need for dialogue and partnership to strengthen the capacity of institutions in addressing the challenges.

Both the parties expressed a strong interest in working closely together to uphold human rights in the country.
