The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a show-cause notice to the Bangladesh campus of UCSI University in Malaysia on Wednesday. The notice was given in a letter signed by UGC Secretary Dr. Ferdous Zaman.
In the notice, the authorities have been asked to answer the allegations of violation of several rules of the Private Universities Act, 2010 and Management of Branch Campuses or Study Centers of Foreign Universities or Institutions Rules, 2014 within next three working days.
According to the show cause notice, Rules 4(1), 4(6), 7(5) and (j), 11(1) of the ‘Management of Branch Campuses or Study Centers of Foreign Universities or Institutions Rules, 2014’ published by the Government of Bangladesh. (c), 12(2) and Private Universities Act-2010 (sections and sub-sections as applicable) have been observed by the Commission to be violated by UCSI University Bangladesh Campus.
UCSI University Bangladesh Campus Vice Chairman Ariful Bari Majumdar told media, “I don’t understand why the UGC issued the show cause notice.” We did not start the process. I didn’t do anything
He further said, the ministry has given us approval. Then we waited for 3 months for UGC to complete the process. Many of the conditions that the UGC has alleged are not applicable to us. For example, it has been said that we do not have a permanent charter. Permanent certificate is given after 7 years, how can we take it? The UGC authorities are supposed to provide three members to form the board, they will provide it. They didn’t do it.
