Two yaba traders killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

Two suspected yaba traders were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Teknaf upazila in Cox’s Bazar early on Monday.  The deceased were identified as Mahmudullah, 27, of Old Pallanpara village under Taknaf municipality, and Mohammad Mizan, 28, of Jhimongkhali area under Whykong union in the upazila.

Prodip Kumar Das, officer-in-charge (OC) of Taknaf Police Station, said that randomly searching a microbus, police recovered 5,000 pieces of yaba pills and detained its driver Mahmudullah on Sunday night. 

Following his confessional statement, a team of police conduc­ted a raid at Jhimongkhali area near Naf River at about 1.00am to recover arms and yaba. Sensing police presence, cohorts of the arrestee opened fire on the police team, forcing them to retaliate, the OC added.

Mahmudullah and Mizan sustained bullet wounds during the gunfight and were rushed to Taknaf Upazila Health Complex. Doctors at the health complex referred them to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital where the on duty doctors declared them dead, said the OC.  Two locally made firearms, three rounds of ammunition and 10,000 pieces of yaba were recovered from the spot. Three cases are being filed in this regard.
