Two children drowned in a pond at Sarkarpara village under Begumganj union of Ulipur Upazila of Kurigram on Wednesday.
The deceased were identified as Lipon Mia, 6, son of Rashed Mia and his cousin Mehedi Hasan, 8, son of Maidul Islam, residents of the same village. Local Union Parishad member Shafikul Islam confirmed the matter to the media.
Shafikul Islam said the children were students of Begum Nurunnahar Government Primary School. After finishing school, Lipon went to a pond adjacent to their houses for taking shower. At one stage, he drowned. Seeing the scene, his cousin Mehedi went to rescue him but he drowned too. Later, locals rushed to the spot and rescued the bodies of the children.
Ulipur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mortuja confirmed the matter to the media.
