Two killed in Dhaka road crashes

At least two people were killed in two road crashes in the capital on Thursday night. 

A youth was killed as a truck hit him at Elephant Road area in the capital at about 10:30 pm.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Fuad Mridha, 32, a driver.

He was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at about 12 mid-night where doctor declared him dead.

Wife of the deceased Lima Akhter said, “A speedy truck hit my husband in the area when he was returning home after work, leaving him critically injured”.

In another road crash, an old woman was killed when a motorcycle hit her in South Keraniganj the capital on Thursday afternoon.

The deceased was identified as Tahera Begum, 22, resident of at Ramer Kanda of Keraniganj

After the road crash, she was brought to a local hospital. Later she was shifted to DMCH as her condition deteriorated. The physicians declared her dead. 

Police Camp In-charge of DMCH Moha­mmad Faruque confirmed the incident and said the body was kept at the morgue of the hospital.

Meanwhile, road crashes have increased in the country. Eight people, including four children, died after a private car fell into a roadside canal in Pirojpur on Thursday. 

The tragic road crash took place in Pirojpur Sadar Upazila’s Kadamtala area. 

Bangladesh has one of the highest road crahs and casualty rates in the world. The costs related to road crashes can be as high as 5.1 percent of the GDP, according to the World Bank. Unsafe and under-invested road infrastructure is one of the key factors for crashes.

Last year, 7,902 people died and 10,372 others were injured in 6,261 road accidents, according to the Bangladesh Passengers’ Welfare Association.

A year before that, road crashes claimed 9,951 lives.
