Two held over murder of journalist’s mother in Tangail

The police arrested two people on Tuesday night in connection with the murder of Sultana Suraiya, mother of Business Standard news editor Abu Shyem Akhund.

The arrested are — Md Labu, 29, of Kanchabari Moddopara Chorpouli of Tangail Sadar and Al Amin Akand, 22, of West Bhuapur in Tangail.

Police Bureau of Investigation Superintendent Mohammed Siraj Amin at a press conference in Tangail on Wednesday said that they arrested the two on clues they got after checking the victim’s cellphone. 

He said that the arrested confessed their involvement in the murder in the primary investigation.

Tangail court inspector Tanvir said that judicial magistrate Monirul Islam sent Al Amin and Md Labu to jail after recording their statement reportedly confessing their involvement in murder.

Police recovered the throat-slit body of Sultana, 65, from her West Bhuapur house in Bhuapur municipal area in Tangail early September 15.

The deceased, wife of freedom fighter Abdur Rahim Akhund, used to live alone at the house.
