Two people, including a student, drowned in ponds in two separate incidents in Panchagarh Sadar upazila and Boda upazila of the district on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Idris Ali Tamim, 14, son of Babul Hossain, resident of Dokropara Mahalla in Panchagarh municipal area, and Diljan Nesa, 75, resident of Kaleshwarpara village under Kajoldighi Kaliyaganj union in Boda upazila.

It was learnt that Tamim went to take a bath in Sadar Upazila Parishad pond with two of his friends. They were taking a bath near the edge of the pond as none of them knew how to swim. At one point, three of them went towards the deep water and started to drown. Although two of them were somehow able to reach to the dry land at that time, Tamim went under water.

Later, locals rushed to the spot when they heard Tamim’s two friends shouting for help. They started searching for Tamim and informed the Fire Service. Later, members of Fire Service and Civil Defense rescued Tamim with the help of the locals. He was taken to Panchagarh Adhunik Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor Touhidul Islam Bhuiyan declared him dead.

Meanwhile, Diljan Nesa of Boda upazila drowned in the pond of their house while coming back from toilet at dawn on Sunday. Her family members searched for her when they did not see her in the morning. They found her floating body in the pond beside their house at that time.

Later, she was rescued and taken to Panchagarh Adhunik Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctor of emergency department declared her dead.

Inspector (Investigation) of Panchagarh Sadar Police Station Ranju Ahmed and Officer-in-Charge of Boda Police Staion Mojammel Haque confirmed the two incidents. They said the bodies were handed over to their families.
