The government has collected two tugboats at a cost of about Tk 145.22 crore to assist in safe berthing and shifting work.
Sources confirmed that two high-capacity 5000 bhp/ 70 ton bollard pool 'Kandari-3' and 'Kandari-4' tugboats made in China reached the waters of Bangladesh on Wednesday.
Two tugboats have been identified at the newly constructed service jetty at the 1st berth of the port. A team of 20 masters, Lashkar, EDL, ED, deck side and engine side team has been formed in the port's naval department for smooth operation of the new two tugs. They have also been given training.
Earlier an agreement was signed in this regard on March 14 at the meeting hall of Chattogram Port.
Chattogram Port Authority Secretary Md. Omar Faruq said that the tugboat procurement project is aimed at increasing the capacity of Chattogram Port to increase the capacity of comparatively large ships.
He said that through the implementation of this project, safe berthing, re-berthing assistance of large merchant ships, support for operational work of newly implemented Bay Terminal and Matarbari Terminal in Maheshkhali / Kutubdia area, enhanced safety assistance for ships arriving at Chattogram port will be easier.
It will be possible to achieve the targets of providing firefighting assistance to commercial vessels, assisting in conducting anti-river and environmental pollution activities, assisting commercial vessels in adverse weather conditions, providing naval protection to the Karnafhuli Channel.
The state-of-the-art technology will increase the capacity of Chattogram port, which will also play a special role in meeting the future needs and will make a huge contribution in revenue collection.
