Turmoil at Sylhet Agricultural University

Students boycott classes protesting JCD-BCL clash

Sylhet Agricultural University is in chaos as students boycott classes and lock down all faculties, including the administrative building. Their protest follows a clash on October 24 with Chhatra Dal members, which they allege involved students supported by the Chhatra League. Students condemned the incident, calling it treasonous and demanding accountability from university authorities.

On Sunday, students gathered outside the university's TSC, chanting slogans like "Administration, administration" and calling for answers. Imam Hasan, a student from the Veterinary Faculty, presented eight key demands on behalf of the protesters.

The students expressed their outrage over comments from Prothom Alo and other media labelling the clash as treasonous without investigation. They are calling for the proctorial body and Sikribi administration to be held accountable for these statements.

Their demands include:

1. Resignation of the proctor, registrar, and public relations officer, along with a public apology.

2. Improved security on campus.

3. A ban on all political activities, including punishment for those participating under political banners.

4. A thorough investigation of the October 24 clash and legal action against those involved.

5. Withdrawal of false press statements and publication of corrections.

6. Timely administration of makeup tests for failing students.

7. A pass mark of 40 in all subjects.

8. 24/7 operation of the university health care centre.

Vice-Chancellor Dr. Md. Alimul Islam stated they are in discussions regarding the situation. Meanwhile, Proctor Professor Dr. Md. Mozammel Haque emphasised the need for an investigation to address any failures.
