Truck runs over, kills journalist in Trishal

Mahmudul Hasan Ratan, a Trishal upazila correspondent of the daily Dhaka Pratidin, was killed when a truck hit a truck at Mymensingh's Trishal on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway.

He was seriously injured in a road accident at around 10pm on Thursday. He was admitted to Trishal Upazila Health Complex and later to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital where his condition deteriorated and he was shifted to Dhaka Pangu Hospital. He died on Friday morning after being taken there. The deceased was identified as Ratan, son of Nur Mohammad of Bagan Haitanikanda village in Trishal upazila

According to eyewitnesses, police and local sources, Mahmudul Hasan Ratan came to Chelerghat area of Dhaka-Mymensingh highway on a motorcycle from his village Bari Bagan Haitanikanda around 10 pm. He was on his way to the Uterne area to cross the Charlene highway when he was hit by a truck carrying Uterne from the opposite direction and fell under the wheels of the truck with his motorcycle. One of his legs was crushed by the truck. 

When the locals informed the fire service, the fire service personnel rescued him from under the truck and admitted him first to Trishal Upazila Health Complex and later to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital. There was a lot of bleeding and deterioration. 

He was immediately referred to Dhaka. At that time, the angry crowd detained the truck along with the driver. Trishal Police Station SI Tafazzal Hossain said the deadly truck and its driver had been arrested. There will be a case in this case.

Officer-in-charge (OC) of Trishal Police Station Main Uddin confirmed the incident and said that the body was handed over to the family without an autopsy on the request of the family. An inquest report has been prepared. Appropriate steps will be taken in this regard.

Journalist Mahmudul Hasan Ratan is the cousin of Mymensingh District correspondent Muhammad Alamgir Kabir of Banik Barta and a contractor of Akij Particle Board. He started his career in 2014 as a staff reporter for the local weekly Sabuj Samay. 

Since 2015, he has been working as the Trishal correspondent of Dhaka Daily. He had earlier worked as an assistant teacher at Trishal Ideal Academy and Joynal Abedin International School.
