Truck driver, helper killed as bridge railing collapses

Two people were killed when a truck lost control and fell into a river crashing through the bridge railing on the Sylhet-Tamabil road on Sunday in the early morning around 6 am. The accident took place at Damri Bridge under Darbast union of Jaintapur upazila, said Mohsin Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Jaintapur police station. The incident caused a long traffic jam on the Sylhet-Tamabil road for several kilometers. However, the police took control of the situation and normalized the traffic around 10:30 am.   

Officer-in-Charge of Jaintapur police station added that two people died on the spot and the deceased were the helper and driver of the truck.  

According to locals the deceased driver was identified as Ebad, a resident of Ferryghat area of Jaintapur upazila, and the helper was identified as Russell Ahmed, a resident of Tamabil area. The truck was used for transporting soil. On its way back to Jaintapur, the truck lost control near Damri bridge and fell into the canal.

Upon receiving the news, a unit of Jaintapur Fire Service rescued the bodies from the truck that was half submerged in mud and water.

Shawkat Ali Joardar, Deputy Assistant Director of the Fire Service and Civil Defense, Sylhet, said, upon receiving the news the bodies were recovered from the spot and sent to the hospital morgue with the help of locals. Fire service personnel were working to rescue the truck damaged in the accident.
