Tributes were paid to the three victims of the recent fire on the Bangladesh Shipping Corporation's (BSC) ship, MT Banglar Jyoti. The victims include deck cadet Sourav Kumar Saha (23), charge man Md Nurul Islam (42), and Mohammad Harun (33), an employee of the BSC Marine Workshop.

On Tuesday, the bodies were brought to BSC premises for funeral prayers, attended by Managing Director Commodore Mahmud Malek and other BSC staff. Funerals were laid in their honour.

BSC has also provided financial assistance of Tk 50,000 to each victim’s family. Further support and humanitarian assistance will be arranged according to BSC guidelines.

The Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC) reported that the fire was caused by an excessive amount of flammable gas stored in the ship’s peak stores. The incident occurred on September 30 at Dolphin Jetty Ghat in Patenga, Chattogram, resulting in three fatalities, including a cadet.

A seven-member inquiry committee has been established by BPC to investigate the accident. The committee submitted its findings on Monday night, and Eastern Refinery Limited's Managing Director, Sharif Hasnat, was called to provide testimony.

According to the report, the mother vessel, Omera Lagacy, was carrying approximately 98,383 metric tonnes of crude oil from Abu Dhabi. The fire broke out during the discharge of about 800 metric tonnes of crude oil when excess flammable gas accumulated in the ship's peak stores, leading to an explosion.
