May 2, 2021 marks the birth centenary of legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray. On this occasion, he will be honored at the Dhaka International Film Festival.
The Tribute section of the Rainbow Film Festival will feature two late Oscar-winning films, Aparajit (1956) and Jalsaghar (1956).
The 19th edition of Dhaka International Film Festival will be held from 16 to 24 January 2021. Among these, there will be a memorial speech program on January 20.
Festival director Ahmed Mujtaba Jamal said they have already started preparatory work. It is hoped that about 200 films from 60 countries will be exhibited this time. Their motto is, as usual, ‘Unnoto Cholochitro, Unnoto Dorshok O Unnoto Shomaj’.
The festival will feature Asian Cinema Section, Tribute, Retrospective, Bangladesh Panorama Section, Cinema of the World Section, Children’s Films Section, Short and Independent Films Section and Spiritual Films Section.
Films of the festival will be displayed at Alliance Francaise, Star Cineplex, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, Central Public Library Auditorium and National Museum Auditorium in Dhaka. In addition to the auditoriums, this is the first time the organizers have decided to use a virtual platform.
Ray was born on 2 May 1921 in Calcutta to a well-known Ray family in the literary and art society. His ancestral home was in the village of Masua in the Katiadi upazila of Kishoreganj (now Bangladesh) in the then British India. He was simultaneously a filmmaker, screenwriter, art director, music director and writer.
He is considered one of the best filmmakers of the twentieth century. He died on 23 April 1992.
