Renowned journalist, writer, and poet Abdul Gaffar Chowdhury, celebrated for his iconic composition "Amar Bhaiyer Rokte Rangano Ekushey February," passed away on May 19, 2022, in London at 87. Chowdhury's legacy spans over seven decades, profoundly impacting Bangladesh's cultural and political landscape.

A pivotal figure in the 1952 Language Movement, Chowdhury penned the immortal lines of the song that became the anthem of the movement, reflecting the struggle and sacrifices of the Bengali people. This song, set to music by Altaf Mahmud, has become a timeless symbol of Bangladesh's fight for linguistic and cultural identity.

Chowdhury's literary prowess extended beyond poetry, with a significant body of work in journalism and political commentary. His columns often critiqued political developments, maintaining influence even during his years in London. Living abroad for over four decades, Chowdhury remained deeply connected to Bangladesh, frequently writing for various newspapers and commenting on political issues.

In addition to his literary achievements, Chowdhury played a crucial role in Bangladesh's liberation struggle. During the 1971 Liberation War, he was actively involved with the expatriate government's media activities in Kolkata, contributing to newspapers and radio broadcasts that supported the independence movement. Post-independence, his writings continued to inspire, challenging oppressive regimes and advocating for justice and democracy. Chowdhury's contributions to literature and journalism earned him numerous accolades, yet he remained a humble advocate for the oppressed. His poignant poems and insightful columns left an indelible mark on the nation's consciousness. Chowdhury's death is a profound loss for Bangladesh, but his legacy endures through his writings and the enduring anthem of "Ekushey February," a testament to his indomitable spirit and love for his country.
