Transport workers in the district stayed off the road for the fourth consecutive day, causing immense sufferings to the commuters, although their leaders had announced to withdraw the strike.
No long haul buses and goods-laden vehicles were seen plying on the road in Sherpur since this morning. During a visit to Nabinagar Bus Terminal in the district town, the correspondent saw the buses kept in a row while the ticket counters remained shut.
Earlier, agitating transport owners and workers withdrew their strike after the government assured them of considering their reasonable demands. Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal made the announcement while talking to reporters in the early hours of the day after a meeting with leaders of Bangladesh Truck, Covered-van Goods Transport Owners-Workers Oikya Parishad at his Dhanmondi residence.
Hamidur Rahman, vice-president of District unit Road Transport Workers union, said: “The workers are reluctant to take out vehicles because of the new Road Transport Act.” A meeting is scheduled to be held in the afternoon and the workers are waiting for any decision coming out of it.
