Torrential rains batter life in Chandpur

Incessant rains and thunderstorms for the past two to three days have paralysed normal life in Chandpur. 

However, it was raining cats and dogs on Saturday. Meanwhile, the gusty wind and waves of Padma and Meghna rivers have increased.

The normal life of the people of the area was crippled due to continuous torrential rain. People were stuck at their houses on Saturday due to rain. The hawkers, rickshaw pullers and labourers went out of their houses despite rainfall. The business organizations of the area opened after 9:00am-10:00am. 

An auto-rickshaw driver, Shahalom, said I have come to Safarmali with passengers from Kallyarpur. Now, I can’t go anywhere due to the rain. Many other auto-rickshaw drivers were stuck at their houses for rain as well. 

Badshah, resident of Bagadi union of Sadar Upazila, said Chandpur Irrigation Project area was waterlogged due to the continuous rainfall. Earlier, water receded from the houses as there was no rain for a few days. Now, the situation is the same as it was before. The cropland and fish ponds were severely damaged. 

Ahsan, resident of Puran Bazar commercial area of the district town, said it has been raining since the morning. We can’t go out. The normal life of the people has become crippled. The roads are quite as the number of rickshaws and auto-rickshaws are less on the roads. 

The fishermen of the district could not go for fishing due to the stormy weather. Moreover, the electricity supply has been disrupted as well due to the rain.

Shah Md Shoyeb, an official of Chandpur met office, said 47 millimeters rain was recorded from Friday 12:00am to Saturday 12:00pm. More rain is expected in the district. The maximum temperature of Chandpur on Saturday was 34.1 degree Celsius and the lowest temperature was 25.6 degree Celsius.
