Poet and filmmaker Tokon Thakur has been granted bail in a case filed against him for embezzling government funds. The court Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sufian Mohammad Noman granted the bail on Monday (October 26th).
Accused Tokon Thakur was produced in court this morning. At that time, the accused’s lawyer applied for his bail. When the prosecution opposed the bail, the court granted him bail at the bond of Tk 2,000 after hearing both the parties.
Earlier, Tokon Thakur was arrested from the New Market area of the capital around 8:30 pm on Sunday (October 25).
According to the case, Tokon Thakur received a government grant in 2013 for making a film based on Shahidul Zahir’s story ‘Kata’. Out of the government grant of Tk 35 lakh, Tk 13 lakh was taken from the Ministry of Information but he did not do any work on the film.
For this reason, a case was filed against Tokon Thakur in 2016 on behalf of the Ministry of Information for embezzling government funds.
In the wake of that case, an arrest warrant was issued against Tokon Thakur by the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on October 3 this month. He was eventually arrested in the New Market area.
