Executive Committee for National Economic Council (ECNEC) in a meeting held Tuesday has approved Tk 1,867 crore Development Project Proposal of 'Rajshahi Medical University Project'.
The RMU project will be implemented on 68 acres of land in Boro Bongram, Baruipara and Baje Silinda areas under Rajshahi city. After the implementation of the project, nearly 780 graduate and post-graduate medical students will get the facility for education and research from 69 departments of 10 faculties under the varsity. Moreover, more than 5,000 people including Nurses and medicare service personnel will be employed in the university. Nearly 20 million people from the Northern region of the country will come under improved treatment and more than Tk 500 crore forex is likely to be saved annually as patients suffering from complex diseases will no longer need to visit abroad for treatment.
Ismael Hossain, Personal Secretary of the Vice-Chancellor of Rajshahi Medical University informed, the activity of land acquisition and the infrastructure development will start soon. In the first phase, 21 establishments including the Academic building, 1,200 bed hospital, mosque, Day care centre, central library, resident of the Vice-Chancellor, Medical Gas plant will be constructed.
According to sources Rajshahi Medical University was established in 2016. Professor Dr AZM Mostaque Hossain was appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of RMU on May 27, 2021. Soon after his joining, RMU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr AZM Mostaque Hossain prepared a DPP and submitted that for approval with the concerned ministry. Later, it was approved by the ECNEC.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Mostaque Hossain also thanked all concerned and expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Health Minister, Planning Minister and State Minister for Planning for the approval of the project. He also thanked RCC Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton for his all out cooperation and advice in this connection.
