Now is the time for realistic research on effective traffic system in Dhaka city like in developed countries. It is necessary to determine which road will be one-way and which road will be two-way by conducting research. We have to take concerted action.
This was stated by Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam while addressing as the chief guest at a seminar on “Lower Class Housing in the City - Realities and Duties” organized by the Urban and Regional Planning Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET) at noon Saturday.
In his speech, he said, "Due to climate change, about two thousand (2000) people are moving to Dhaka city every day. The number of low-income people is constantly increasing in Dhaka city. We will coordinate with the concerned departments to implement the 3 researches that the students have done on the reality and work to be done by the lower class housing in the city. I want to implement it as a project."
"Research has shown that 80 per cent of the country's population will move to cities by 2050. We need to think about this now," he said.
The mayor said that DNCC is emphasizing on housing for low-income people.
He said, "Construction of multi-storied residential building is underway in Gabtali City Palli at a cost of Taka 249.46 crore for the cleaning staff of Dhaka North City Corporation which will be completed in June, 2023. Construction of four 15-storey residential buildings and a school for the City Corporation's 64 cleaners is underway."
He added, "Dhaka has become a destination for all migrants in the country. This Dhaka city has been built unplanned for centuries. Housing societies are not completing their housing projects as per the design approved by RAJUK. I urge all concerned departments including RAJUK to build more housing projects unplanned. If it doesn't get up, it has to be supervised. No building is built that harms the environment."
At the end of the speech, the DNCC Mayor inaugurated a website of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning of BUET.
Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET) Vice-Chancellor Prof. BUET Vice-Chancellor Prof Abdul Jabbar Khan and Secretary of the Planning Commission's Department of Physical Infrastructure Mamun Al Rashid were special guests at the seminar chaired by Satya Prasad Majumdar. RAJUK Chairman Anisur Rahman Miah discussed the research presented at the seminar.
Also present on the occasion were DNCC Chief Engineer Brigadier General Mohammad Amirul Islam and Chief Urban Planner Maqsood Hashem, among others.
