Tigers’ prospects and reality

Published : 18 Sep 2024 09:42 PM

Bangladesh, since their debut in the Test Crikcet, has faced India for 13 times before to begin the series today. This is the first time excitement and the expectation looms large among the fans, as the Tigers going to play the series against India following their historic series win against Pakistan at their soil.

Bangladesh played their inaugural Test against India, when the then Test babe just made a flying start with scoring 400 runs in their first innings against the iconic bowlers Jabagal Srinath, Jahir Khan and Sunil Joshi. Bangladesh also bowled out India for 429 runs in their first innings, but the Test debutane could not keep their momentum in the second innings as they were bundled out for paltry 90 runs, eventually India won the match on fourth day by nine wickets. Despite losing the match, many of the world cricket legends applauded the Bangladesh team, the new member in the elite club, specially, Aminul Islam Bulbul, who played a splendid 145 runs innings and the bowlers Naimur Rahman Durjoy (six wickets) and Mohammed Rafique (three wickets) were highly praised for their outstanding bowling.

However, since their first time meeting in 2000, the Bangladesh’s expectation was never so high against India, as this time they set the target to win when earlier in every occasion their main objectives were at least to draw. Fans also wiped out towards of team’s disappeared, when the Tigers could manage only two draws and suffered defeats in 11 matches out of their 13 previous meetings.

Now, bringing up the ecstasy of winning against Pakistan, optimism of Bangladesh with two-Test series in India raised high. But the drawbacks of hope follow the example of previous history against India.

India's record in home Tests against the two other teams (Test teams), Pakistan and Sri Lanka are also extremely remarkable, as they (India) have lost only one home Test series against their arch-rivals (Pakistan) in 1987. Sri Lanka have been playing Tests in India since 1982, but are yet to tsate a win against the hosts in their 22 attempts.

So, reality is that it’s more than tough to beat India in their home and for the Tigers it would be an uphill task to overcome.

But Bangladesh can stand their ground with hope and take aim at the giant, as it is not guaranteed the victory for the titans in the battlefield and of course in cricket, as it’s a game of uncertainty, as even an underdog could topple a heavyweight, Tigers win against Pakistan is the recent example.
