Tigers likely to play with three pacers

During practice session on Wednesday, fast bowlers Khalid Ahmed, Nahid Rana, and Mushfiq Hasan were bowling longer spells. Even on Thursday, these three were found practicing. However, Shariful Islam, who was part of the playing XI in the first Test against Sri Lanka today (Friday), did not bowl; he was given rest. Considering his workload during the first Test, it’s likely that Khalid might be included in the playing XI alongside two experienced pacers. In the BPL, Nahid is generating speeds of 149 kilometers per hour. Despite having a lanky frame, he consistently maintains pace of over 140 kilometers. There’s a strong possibility that he might be used as a green wicket specialist. Although he has been included in the Test squad this time, Mushfiq has been part of the team before but hasn’t played a Test match yet. This time, he might earn his Test cap.

The Sylhet International Cricket Stadium has a lush green outfield. If the grass isn’t trimmed on the match day, fast bowlers will find more assistance on this wicket. The overcast conditions also favor the pacers.

Among the four pacers in Bangladesh’s Test squad, Khaled Ahmed is the most experienced. His record includes 12 Tests. The team’s coach believes that there isn’t much difference between spinners and pacers when it comes to wickets in Bangladesh. With three pacers alongside the two spinners, the team has a good balance.

During a press conference on Thursday, Chandika Hathurusingha expressed hope for the two young pacers waiting in the wings: “We can include two or three pacers in the XI. They are both talented and promising for Bangladesh. They can bowl at speeds exceeding 140 kilometers. However, they are both young and powerful. They started their first-class cricket careers well and have bowled a lot. I am eagerly waiting to see either of them play in this match. Maybe both.”

As the visiting team, Sri Lanka won’t have a spin assistant in the wicket. They aim to trouble the opposition with pace.

The coach emphasizes the ideal combination, relying on our strength and the limitations of the opposition.
